Frank Gehry and Rafael Moneo, two sides of the same coin.

A comparison of apparent opposites, one organized, the other abstract, one to integrate and one to set apart. Both architects of great renown, they represent a living duality within architecture. The creative versus the analytic, how form functions, the creation of space while also including efficiency and conscious design regarding its surroundings. The major difference between these architects to me it seems to be their design process.

Moneo takes a more classical and traditional approach, he takes into account the site, the history of the location and materials within the location. This way he makes an extremely informed design. In a majority of his designs, Moneo supports a minimalist approach in regards to aesthetic values giving his designs an organized and clean look.

Gehry on the other hand runs against classical approaches. He integrates technology along with challenging the standard. His design process functions also as a way to study and explore materials and the breakable limits with architecture.

Both add to architecture in in different areas that ultimately reach the same end goal. Creating usable space, structures that not only work within their current context they exalt it. Thus, one is not superior to the other. As an inherently creative career architecture is subversive and divisive as is any design centered profession. This is where the innovation, proper standardization, structures, aesthetics and function fuse together in response to one designer to the other.
